You've made it to the final competency! Pat yourself on the back!
Competency 6 has only 5 components.
For component 1, please share (in the comments section of this post) ways you use technology to research, organize, evaluate, and/or communicate information.
For component 2, access one of the suggested training resources and share something you've learned in the comments section of this post.
For component 3, access the intranet and share something you've learned from ALL STAFF NEWS by posting in the comment section below. You can also share ways in which you think the intranet is helpful to staff and/or what you think should be added or changed.
*There is also a training session for this component on June 29. Maybe one person from our branch can attend this training and share info with the rest of the team.
For component 4, visit https://apps.google.com/products/hangouts/ to familiarize yourself with Google's web conferencing platform. Also, see if you can install and use the Google Hangouts app on any one of our Android or iOS mobile devices. You can even pair up with another staff member and have a practice Google Hangouts conference. After you've used Google Hangouts, in the comments section, share a way in which using web conference tools like Hangouts might be beneficial to your job.
*In the future, we can schedule a time to use Hangouts together as a team.
For component 5, visit a tech website and share something you've read that you think is relevant to the library world. If you don't see anything on the website's homepage, remember to use the website's search function to pinpoint a specific topic.
Here's a list of some of the tech sites I often visit:
http://www.gizmag.com/
http://techcrunch.com/
http://www.wired.com/
http://www.cnet.com/
http://www.techradar.com/us
To clarify, please post a total of 5 comments (can be in a single post as demonstrated by other staff) below based on the 5 measurements above. If you're logged into the MPKCMLIBRARY account, remember to change to NAME/URL under "COMMENT AS" so you can enter your own name.
Once you've finished, you will receive your certificate and your diploma for completing all 6 competencies!
Remember to update your progress on the spreadsheet.
I use technology each day when I use email to communicate with co-workers, friends and family, I listen to podcasts on my tablet, I use google hangouts to call my sister at lunch, I read magazines through Zinio on my tablet, my husband and i share a grocery shoppping list and i can send new items through the app - grocery IQ, i can map my walk route and mileage, i stream tv and movies to my media centre at home.
ReplyDeleteComponent 1 I use technology such as email, to communicate with coworkers, and family members. I use twitter to communicate with friends as we debate sports and other social topics. We use google to verify the facts and statistics of those debates.
ReplyDeleteComponent 2: To zoom in or out on the Safari browser on the iPad, you use a pinch and drag on the screen
Component 3: One thing I learned is that One Click Digital, is having first time user registration issues. The intranet needs to bring back the snag shelf
Component 4: Google Hangouts are useful when connecting with others from other branches for meetings and holding webinars.
Component 5: San Antonio Texas opens its first book less library. http://www.gizmag.com/bibliotech-bookless-library/25799/ UPDATE: They now have two all digital branches
Component 2: I learned about GPS tracking apps such asLife 360, so that I can to track my husband
ReplyDeleteComponent 3: I learned that Viviette White of BFR fame has graduated with her Masters in Library Science.
Component 4: Hangouts would be so useful to have quick meetings with multiple people and save many of us from having to drive across town or even leave our branch. This would save time and money.
Component 5: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/buy-chromebook-android-apps-200443448.html Inread and shared this article regarding the Google Chromebook soon being able to access the android apps, including the google play store.
Just this morning I communicated with Katy Rust about the new Clutter feature on the new Outlook. She and I had both found that we had missed important emails because Clutter had snagged them but neither of us knew how to turn it off. I went back through emails, found one from Clutter, found a link on how to turn it off but the instructions didn't fit what I had on the screen. I emailed the link to Katy and she explained what to do. I followed her instructions and it seemed to work.
ReplyDeleteI've also used what we've learned to research evaluate the Freading site on CML. I've had problems downloading items and did some Google searching and found that others have had the same problems.
Component 2: I learned a lot about the Cloud at the gcfreelearn site in Competency 3
ReplyDeleteComponent 3: I learned about the updated Program Presenters and Summer Break printable materials at All Staff News
Component 5: I found tips on Google searching at http://www.techradar.com/us
I'll work on Component 4 later
I agree with Carolyn and Justin in that Google Hangouts would be a great to hold meetings and save travel time.
ReplyDeleteFYI - Trilby and I completed this competency but for some reason, our comments have been removed (???).
ReplyDeleteComponent 1: I use email at work and home, texting on my phone, and Facebook messaging when at my PC to communicate with friends and colleagues daily. My family stays in touch over the long distance between NC and Florida using Skype calls. I use discount apps on my phone and browser to save and get money back on purchases. Our home uses a Western Digital hub to stream music and movies.
ReplyDeleteComponent 2: gcflearnfree had great tips for Publisher, like how to align objects to each other v. aligning them to the margin or paper edge.
Component 3: I learned that CML won the ALA's most prestigious award (John Cotton Dana) for the library-awareness-raising programs our M&C dept. put together. Very impressive! Re: the intranet, it needs to return to being more interactive to be as useful as it was previously. And Justin's right, a "snag" page is needed, even it starts out being very basic.
Component 4: Since Hangouts can be used even by those who don't have a Google account, it would work well for CML meetings, even though it's limited to 15 participants per meeting. Not having to drive/carpool/park would be a time AND money saver.
Component 5: On "Wired", I learned that, as of this fall, Chromebooks should be able to download/run any app that an Android device can, which will make it even more useful for CML patrons than it already is.
