Competency 3 - Internet

Instructions for Competency 3 were emailed to all MPK staff on 3/20/2016


This email will cover measurements for Competency 3: Internet Basics based on the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Digital Competencies checklist. If you have missplaced your checklist, I have attached a copy to this email. On the checklist, you will see 16 components that you will work on in order to demonstrate competency. This is a rather lengthy competency, so I think a fair deadline is April 16.

Please use the lynda.com, GCF Learn Free, and other suggested resources mentioned in the checklist to prepare you for demonstrating basic internet knowledge. To measure successful completion of Competency 3, please complete the following:

For components 1 through 3, please
·         visit: http://www.gcflearnfree.org/internet101
·         review information in boxes 1-5
·         take the quiz
·         score 90% or better
·         take a screen shot of your results and save it to your computer
·         send the screen shot as an attachment to  mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com with the subject: Internet 101

For component 4, please:
·         use Google and find the library's I CAN logo somewhere on the internet
·         save the logo to your computer
·         send it as an attachment to mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com with the subject: I CAN

For component 5, please:
·         visit http://www.gcflearnfree.org/computerbasics/4  and review information about "the cloud"
·         visit http://www.gcflearnfree.org/what-is-the-cloud for additional information
·         take the quiz by visiting http://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=cloud-basics
·         score 80% or better and send a screen shot of your score to mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com with the subject "CLOUD"

Skip component 6 for now.

For components 7 & 9, please:
·         visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/0/22562913 to learn what a search engine is
·         visit http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/s/searengi.htm to learn how search engines work
·         visit http://beebom.com/2015/07/google-alternatives to learn about different search engines and how they compare to Google
·         compose an email listing at least 4 search engines other than Google you would recommend to a customer
·         in the same email, list at least 3 other "Baracks" you find in your results after Googling  keywords "BARACK -OBAMA"
·         name the subject "SEARCH ENGINES" and send to mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com
·         visit http://www.marketingterms.com/dictionary/web_directory/ to learn what a web directory is
·         visit http://www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/top-25-most-powerful-web-directories-list.html to view a list of web directories
·         also http://www.ipl.org/div which is the librarian's internet index
·         side note: Web directories are rarely used anymore. Many of them have been closed down or are no longer being updated.
·         visit https://www.cmlibrary.org/resources and use the "research databases" filter
·         from the results, access 3 different research databases and send an email to mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com with the subject" DATABASES" listing what these 3 databases can be used for

For components 8 and 12-15, please:
·         visit http://www.gcflearnfree.org/internetsafety and review topics 1-9
·         take the quiz
·         score 88% or better
·         take a screen shot of your results and send it to mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com with the subject "INTERNET SAFETY"

For component 10, please:
·         watch this Youtube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3MP7y1vMUs
·         side note: You will demonstrate knowledge on this later.

Skip component 11 for now.

For component 16, please
·         visit https://cmlibrary.org/internet-policy
·         take the quiz by visiting http://tiny.cc/cmlnetpolicy
·         score 85% or better
·         take a screen shot and send to mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com with the subject "INTERNET POLICY"

For component 6, please:
·         review the library's updated digital brochures by visiting http://tiny.cc/digitalbrochures
·         using the branch schedule and ROOM RESERVE, schedule time to use the Galaxy Tab, iPad, and/or Kindle Fire
·         install and familiarize yourself with the following apps with help from the corresponding brochures:
1.       Zinio
2.       Hoopla
3.       Overdrive
·         complete the Digital Scavenger Hunt activity (found here)
·         you can either complete the scavenger hunt on your own or with an another staff member (eBuddy) and take turns with the questions
·         you can either send the completed activity to mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com with the subject SCAVENGER HUNT or print the document and put it on my workspace after you've filled in the answers
·         after you have successfully completed this activity, you should be able to start helping customers access digital content using Overdrive, Hoopla, and Zinio.

     For component 11, please:
   watch the very long Bibliocommons training by visiting https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=E0PjCB37SeE&feature=youtu.be

Then, compose a list of any 5 features you can tell customers about to encourage them to use Bibliocommons. Send the list to mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com with the subject BIBLIOCOMMONS.

P.S. Don't forget to list your weekly progress on the Google Drive spreadsheet Justin created called Digital Competency Progress Schedule. You can find it in the ALL THINGS DIGITAL folder. Use the tabs at the bottom of that spreadsheet to access different weeks.
