This measurement will cover components 1-9 of Competency 4 - Digital Devices and Resources. Components 1-9 cover the basics of using all six of our new digital devices:
Kindle Fire
iPad Mini
Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 (Nook) - Small white tablet
Samsung Galaxy Tab S - Larger Samsung tablet in OtterBox
Asus Chromebook
Microsoft Surface Pro
*The iPad Air will arrive at a later date and will be used with mobile circ.
For this competency, you should go into ROOM RESERVE and reserve each of these devices. You don't have to reserve them all for the same day, but maybe two per week since the due date for this competency is May 6.
Using the information in the DIGITAL DEVICES binder, what you've learned from Competencies 1-3, and the device brochures located here, familiarize your with the CML Content available to use on each device. For example, if you turn to the KINDLE FIRE BASICS page in the binder, at the bottom, you should see a list of CML Content available to use on this device. In fact, each device's page has this same information. This tells you which content is available/compatible for each device. Some content needs to be installed (from the App or Playstore) and some can only be accessed through the device's browser.
On each device, install/access and use one or two different CML resources. Try to test a variety of apps and content to give yourself an idea of what to expect when you help customers. It's probably a good idea to play around with resources you have little or no experience with (Freegal, Tutor.com, ebrary, etc.)
Next, use the Digital Competency Progress Schedule (click to open) to share the names of the devices you've used and the content you've accessed, including names of apps and titles you've downloaded or streamed.

In the A column, you should see your name and a list of the devices under your name.
In the first row of columns B-J, you will see achievements that you should be able to accomplish based on what you've learned from Competencies 1-3. In general, you should be able to agree with each statement in those columns. To be specific, state which devices you have used to compete each of the activities in row 1 of columns B-J by entering "YES" or "NO" under the category and device. Take a look at my name and answers to give yourself an idea of what you should do. If you have questions about this part, please let me know.

Component 10
Component 10
For part 10 of Competency 4,
we need to know how to assist customers with any equipment we have available in our branch.
Right now, we really just have public PCs, but beginning in May, the Chromebook
will also be available. Since we already have basic knowledge with helping
customers use the public PCs, for this component, we’ll focus on Chromebook
rules and usage.
Sometime between now and May
6, please go into ROOM RESERVE, reserve the Chromebook, and familiarize
yourself with basic features (turning on, shutting down, navigating, etc.).
Then, access the intranet and
visit https://staff.cmlibrary.org/content/chromebook-training-module-and-support-documentation,
complete the training through Meck Edu, and send a list of 5 facts and features
related to the Chromebook to mpkcmlibrary@gmail.com
with the subject CHROMEBOOK.
Once you’ve completed all
Competency 4 components, you will receive a certificate!
As always, let me know if you have questions or comments!
